So you're addicted to your smartphone

You can (and probably should) try to do something about it, but the thing is: you're just one fragile human being. Thousands and thousands of experts have worked very hard to maximize how addictive these devices are. Would it really be a good existence if you spent every moment of the rest of your life actively fighting the urge to pick up your phone?

The only realistic way to change anything is to change the technology industry. At the moment, the business model of the industry is To Make People Addicted So That They'll See As Many Ads As Possible, but it doesn't have to be that way. The design of these apps and devices could also be based on helping people genuinely control and choose what kind of role they want technology to play in their lives. You could get all the good sides of a smartphone without losing and missing out on all the things you love and care about in the non-digital world.

But none of this will happen unless people start demanding it. That's where our power as individuals really is. Not in superhuman willpower.
