Maybe "nature versus culture" is a much better question than "nature versus nurture". Maybe the most powerful environmental factors are not parents or even peers per se, but the ideas, beliefs, values and fantasies that one adopts from their environment. Almost everything about my behaviour, self-view and perception of the world is profoundly different from who I would have been had I been born 20 thousand years ago or in 1894. In some ways, I'm even radically different from the person I was 5 years ago, and it's not genetics or even epigenetics; it's the dreams and ideas that are constantly changing and evolving. And they are part of something bigger.

Maybe the story happening in and through me is a story bigger than mine. Maybe the most important thing evolving in me is the world.
